Today more and more individuals take it upon his or herself to get the education needed and the work done in order to succeed in a chosen profession. Career development is a process, or cycle, an individual follows to prepare, sustain, and advance in their chosen career.

The one thing all occupations take into account when assessing their career development needs is what they already know. Students showing great aptitude for artistic skills may wish to continue by finding a career that incorporates one, or more of their talents. For example, a person who doodles, draws, and has experience with graphic programs may wish to go into graphic design and logo making for large companies and small businesses.

While many companies still choose to educate, these days it is up to the majority of individuals to assume responsibility for their own education, progress and career development. The more prepared a person is the better their chance at getting hired and advancement. Long term career development planning stages keeps the individual motivated. It is an ongoing process of assessing present day skills and a desire to expand and use them in advancement.

Career development planning counselors can help individuals break out of repeated behavior or the guilty feeling that comes with changing the career path. Some people feel paralyzed when they wish to take their career into a new direction. Fear of failure, of taking their family down the wrong path and losing everything can force the most talented among us to change their mind.

Part of assessing career development needs is realizing when further education is required for career advancement. While taking classes for a chosen field a good plan is to take classes centering on career development as well. It is not always necessary, but it is a great way to keep up with present markets if the individual and company want to advance in today’s moneymaking society.

A person’s career development needs can change slowly over time, or drastically when they decide to try a different career. Career development sites and conferences provide interested individuals with information that covers what types of classes and courses they offer, available instructors, and class and environment requirements. Lastly, the decision is still depending on the individual whether to embark on a new career path or to stay put in his place now.

Career development is an avenue that a person must adhere to in order to prepare for, sustain and to advance in the careers they have chosen.

Before now, many big name companies had conferences that centered on the topic of career development for their employees. It was good for 2 reasons; it helped its employees gain the needed skills important to enhancing their future goals in their career.

Many companies will still educate their employees, however nowadays it is important for the individual to assume this responsibility by taking control of their own education and progress through career development. The more the person prepares himself the more chances he will have at advancement.

One of the most important things that a person can do is to examine the career development goals and the skills they possess. They should know what they are going to be, if they are good at organizing others, and can they work in one to one situations with their clients. Companies are interested in the skills their new employees will bring to the table.

The next aspect of career development is the decisions you will make about what career is best for you presently. An example would be, Joe wants to be a graphic artist, he knows he will need schooling and talent in the graphic arts, and maybe even some mathematics in his bag of tricks.

Once he knows what skills he can market in his career choice, then he can fully realize what areas will need tweaking if he is to move up in his career. In career development education is a key factor.

While deciding on classes to take to enhance your career it is a good idea to choose a few career development classes as well. You can do this at anytime during your career development process. These classes teach important skills such as writing the perfect resume, and may also recommend seminars or conferences that will further your career objectives.

Continuing Education is an important part of change; it makes you more prepared for the new avenues your company may want to explore.

There are many career development studies and surveys which watch for the stress levels of the employee. Companies want to have an idea of how well you will cope with stressful situations, whether or not you can get others to do their job effectively, are you a social or solitary person, Is he the type of person to explain problems to his employer, or hold it bottled inside, or to take it out on others.

There are many other things to consider, but here is a few to get you on the right track to your perfect career.

As a natural part of my empowerment consulting practice, I often find myself in discussions with my clients about their jobs and careers. Sometimes we talk about new jobs or job opportunities; sometimes we talk about promotions; sometimes we talk about careers over the long-term.

These are all very different types of conversations. Most of my clients who are in corporations are mid-level to senior-level managers, who are competent and have already proven their value to the company. I also work with clients who are outside the corporate structure or are consultants to corporations, with whom career development conversations are different.

It is common for people to want to have a career development plan. Many think that those successful individuals who have preceded them in the corporation had a plan to get where they got. Some did, but quite honestly, it is easier for them to claim that they had a plan with the benefit of hindsight and success than to produce the plan they wrote years before.

There is a whole field of professionals who offer career development resources and consulting. I think their services can be extremely valuable, especially when moving from one company to another. I am more familiar with helping people to advance and develop careers within the same company, as an integral part of my consultations. And so, that is my focus in this article.

In these client conversations about career development within the same company, I usually fairly quickly replace the concept of a “career development plan” with a “career networking plan” or a “career development networking plan.”

I’ve been working with a client who has been kicking and screaming about the idea of networking. She has been doing excellent work and feels she should be promoted based on her work. In one way, she’s absolutely correct. However, at her level in the organization, not only are there fewer openings, but a group of disparate persons with their own agendas usually decides about promotions and job changes.

When multiple persons with all different needs are involved in such a decision, there must be agreement that she is the one to promote or accept or move. Such a scenario usually requires more than doing the requisite job skills well. In most cases, the “more” comes down to ongoing activities she must be engaged in: networking and building authentic relationships.

I want to be clear, when I speak about career development networking, I do not mean to start networking to get a job that is now in the interview stage; my view is that this narrow type of networking is more appropriately called “lobbying.” Instead, I am speaking about networking over the years — building relationships that are two-way, developing collaborative partnerships, feeling appreciation about interactions, expressing sincere congratulations when others are promoted, and engaging in conversations about a variety of topics.

When many individuals are all well-qualified for a job, something “more” must stand out in the final candidate. This “more” may be related to job accomplishments, but likely, the “more” is related to relationships — perhaps the one who is best known, or the one who is most liked, or the one who has consistently good interactions with others.

The candidate who is well-networked is likely to increase the chances that all the decision-makers will agree, “this is the one.” There might sometimes be a thrill about a hotly contested position, but all things considered, the best transitions take place when there’s general agreement to select the final candidate.

Career Development Networking — a Starting Plan

First of all, it’s important that you think of networking as two-way! This is essential. The word “networking” has become rather polluted by the way some persons are using this word. Use the word however you want, but please understand that here I am using it to mean an exchange. Be pragmatic, of course, but understand that you are only “networked” if a two-way connection is happening. This is absolutely essential to understand, if you want to make this an empowering practice.

In my empowerment consulting sessions, I’m often coaching clients about the best persons to network with, the subjects to speak about, and how to speak about the subjects. Those who are a little shy or reticent about speaking with someone at much higher levels sometimes just need this added encouragement to take the step to network.

Many successful people already understand the need to network within their company. They probably don’t need a plan. Some jobs require that individuals know, interact, and partner with others in the company, and so they are usually well-networked naturally. If the company is large, though, there are many persons outside the scope of the current job who are potentials for expanding a network.

Here is a simple approach to getting started. Make two lists of persons in your company. The first is a list of the persons you already know and like. The second is a list of the persons you believe can, at some time, help you in your career — you may already know them or not. It is o.k. to have the same person on both lists; in fact, this strategy depends on that!

The intersecting subset of those two lists is the starting place. In other words, start your networking plan with the persons you like, whom you think can help you in your career. You will have more success by starting where it is easiest. Keep your lists updated over time, so that this is an organic process.

The next step is to decide, person by person, how and how often to network. Again, start where it is easiest. If you have regular meetings with someone on your target list, sit near the person, or suggest that you have lunch afterward, or take an interesting article to give to the person. If you consider you are already actively networking with this person, you may not need to adjust any actions. Just be certain to keep the person on your radar screen.

For best results, keep a journal of your networking. In your journal or on your calendar, make a notation for yourself for your next contact. By all means, do not over-commit yourself to starting to build too many new relationships at the same time. As a relationship is in the stage where either you and the other person are at ease to “call anytime,” you have built a relationship, so continuing it is easier.

Networking is as simple as such examples as I’ve just given; a networking plan is also simple. It just requires some, ummmm, planning and paying attention.

A career development centre can be a service, or a group of programs that provides people with any level of education, whether they are undergraduate, a graduate, or an alumni, to plan for or deal with career transitions that inevitably arise in the life of any person. Each career development centre will have a career counsellor even though the centres may operate differently. All career counsellors provide guidance through personal interaction.

A college or a university campus is sure to have a career development centre attached to it. A student or an alumnus with any degree or career goal can consult them for guidance. The teachers and counsellors are trained to understand the qualities, interest and current skills of the person and match it with best career options. This process of interaction helps a student to decide upon the subject for majoring. The counsellor also assists in building skills to appear in interviews and negotiate a salary, apart from finding a suitable internship. Career development centres are also found in hospitals and clinics. The purpose of these is to help nurses and medical practitioners in getting ahead in their career.

There are websites that can be referred to, for information on skills required to work with patients and also to attain success in this field. People who are caregivers to the aged people in their immediate circle can find support in the form of counselling so that they are able to overcome the feeling of being swamped as well as classes conducted at a hospital career development centre that explain the steps to be taken in case of an emergency and the right of taking care. Periodic group sessions for caregivers also enable them to vent their feelings, cope with the adjustment process and also discuss worries and concerns.

Job fairs at a career development centre provide the platform for interaction among professionals in various fields and job seekers. Presentation and catalogues of companies from across the country are available to learn more about the organisation and company representatives are also present to provide answers to queries. These job fairs are an excellent opportunities to learn about job requirements and performance criteria.

Sometimes career development centres hold crash courses, either free of cost or for a small fee. These short term courses, held over an entire day or spread out over a weekend are an excellent way to learn about career options. These usually fill up fast, so watch out for their advertisements and enrol early!

More than offering just classes, the career development centres fulfil an important role. Check out online or with your college or university to find out more and enrol.

One of the biggest difficulties that is faced by people who are seeking career development is that it is difficult to find the time to balance career development with their everyday career responsibilities. Luckily, many career oriented people can now find time for career development using online education to further their career skills while working during the day. This makes the balance between your career and the development of further career skills much easier to strike up, because you can work when you need to, and go through career development courses through online education in your spare time. By making it possible to achieve career development using online education, career oriented people can now learn new career skills and further their career capabilities without causing their normal work to suffer. If you are serious about furthering your career, career development using online education is a wise path to take. Here is more information about the benefits of career development using online education as a foundation.

The purpose of career development using online education is to give you the training that you need over the internet in order to meet the needs of your career or a future career that you hope to become a part of in the future. Most career development services include full training and full testing for individuals that want to develop their careers into something more. Some of the skill sets that are covered when seeking career development using online education include safety skills and industrial based technologies, computers, internet and information technologies, management and leadership skills and small business operation skills, professional development and personal development, though there are many other skills that can be developed in the realm of career development using online education.

What makes the idea of career development using online education so useful is that career oriented people can develop their careers outside of work and do not need to sacrifice time or focus at work to gain new career skills. Rather than having to leave your job to seek a new skill set, you can develop the career skill set that you need over the internet, in the comfort of your own home and best of all, on your own personal schedule, which means that you can work days and study at night, or work nights and study during the day, and everything is on your own time and at your own convenience, which means that you will be able to benefit exponentially from what the career development courses and training have to offer you.

Sometimes career development using online classes means visiting a specific public computer lab, while other times it simply means logging in from home. Different programs have different requirements, but the same focus is always there: Career development using online classes is designed to let people further their careers by developing new career skill sets over the internet, which is one of the best ways to create job security, especially in these uncertain economic times.
